About Us

Neil (South African born) and Melanie (American born) Stuckenberg has set up camp for good. After several years in the corporate world in the US we wanted to build our future on a little piece of untouched African bush.

A long search brought us to Kwa-Mbili Game Lodge, where we now raise our daughters Lucy and Emily ... and at times an abandoned baby from the wild too. Our most recent surrogate, a Lesser Bushbaby named Darby, has since left home to start his own family.

We focus on giving you a very personal experience of the African bush and its wildlife by limiting the number of guests to 10 at a time. That way, you get exceptional flexibility and personal attention.

This approach is evident in all aspects of your stay: Neil's knowledge and enthusiasm on safaris and guided bush walks truly bring the animals and their habits to life; Mel's food is homemade using fresh, seasonal ingredients from local farms; and our comfortable accommodation is tastefully decorated in a style that resonates with our unique setting.

Kwa-Mbili Game Lodge is both our home and our passion, so relax and enjoy the luxuries in camp and let us share with you the wonder of the African bush.

The Weather and What to Pack

Life here is informal, so remember to pack casual, neutral coloured clothes and comfortable walking shoes. A warm jacket for the evening as well as a hat, sunglasses and binoculars will come in handy. We are in a low risk malaria area but you may want to bring mosquito repellent and also some sunscreen.

  • The geographical position of South Africa in the subtropical climate zone is not as noticeable on the Highveld, the central plateau, as in the Lowveld, where summer temperatures can climb above 40 degrees celsius. Rainfall in the Lowveld averages 800 mm per annum, and falls mainly during the summer months, which results in humid, sultry weather. The rainy season usually starts in September and can last until May.

The climate is much more tolerable in the dry winter months of June, July and August. Then the days are mild and the nights a little cool. This time of the year is also ideal for animal viewing in the Kruger National Park, because the shrubs and trees don't have so many leaves to obstruct the view. Since it hardly ever rains in winter, the game must come to the waterholes to drink in the mornings and afternoons and can easily be observed from the car.
